The Ethnologue catalog is currently listing 6909 living languages in its records, an astoundingly high number when you stop to think that almost 1.2 billion people alone speak Chinese on this planet. To be fair, Chinese is technically a language that has actually enveloped several other dialects over the centuries. This includes Mandarin’s whopping contribution of 848 million speakers. This story isn’t about bigger being better, though. It’s more an acknowledgement of the fact that across Planet Earth individuals are using some curiously odd and original ways to communicate with the same set of tools we English-speaking folk use to scream at the neighborhood kids to get off our lawn with.
There's a lot of ways to vocally communicate on this planet of ours, but thanks to our mouths and tongues how some of that comes out ranges from beautiful to bizarre.
